Wisconsin Legislation Introduced to Expand Concealed Carry, Trump Private Property Rights

Wisconsin -(Ammoland.com)- Under current law, off-duty and former police officers must follow the same rules as concealed carry license holders with respect to where they can carry concealed weapons, and abide by restrictions on private property that is posted “no firearms”.

2 companion bills have been authored in the Wisconsin Senate and Assembly that would trump private property owners’ rights and allow *former* and *off-duty* police to ignore “no firearms” postings on private property.

Under this newly introduced legislation *off-duty* and *former* law enforcement officers would be granted special privileges to ignore the rights of private property owners to prohibit carry on their property as well as ignore prohibitions against carrying on school grounds.

Wisconsin Carry believes that any justification to support allowing off-duty and former law enforcement officers to carry on school grounds should apply to concealed carry license holders as well.

We also believe that despite our view that stores should choose to allow law-abiding folks to exercise their right to carry, we ultimately support the private property rights of citizens and business owners. We do not think off-duty and former police officers should be granted special privilege to carry on other people’s private property where the property owner, whether that be a homeowner, or a business owner, has chosen to prohibit firearms.

We have issued an alert to our membership across the state of Wisconsin to contact their State Senators and State Assembly Representatives and ask them to reject this legislation which creates a privileged class of citizens (off-duty and former law enforcement) who are allowed to live under different laws than the average law-abiding Wisconsin resident.

I whole heartedly support the 2nd amendment. The right to bear arms is a fundamental liberty, but I can't say that it should conflict with another’s rights. If it is a private person’s property then their wishes should be respected. Security of your property and your right to defend it should mean you can set your own rules to do that to. As far as in public I would like to see a day when it is less difficult for law abiding people to carry firearms.
