Best type of ammo to use for targets and home defense for the S&W SD40VE?

Michael Wayne White

What does the VE stand for, obviously the SD is for Self Defense? This is driving me crazy!!

Michael Wayne White

I appreciate that.

I’ve had my 9D VE for 3 months now and I’m still having an accuracy problem? I’m getting a 50% hit average? Seems to be moody? Any suggestions? Like the weight and grip but don’t know what it could be

Barry Glass

My sd40ve shoots low,why

Anthony

…. the only way your going to have a failure with a weapon is if you using fake hollow points aka look at the box if it says not for police use then you’ve probably bought some crap type mo and will either have complete and total failure or ftf problems ALWAYS MAKE SURE IT SAYS FOR POLICE USE ON THE BOX!!!! I’m a act 235 certified personnel for my job and even they say if it doesn’t state police use DONT FREAKING USE IT!!!!

I bought the SD40 VE yesterday for my first hand gun. Immediately went to shoot it, I put 28 fmj rounds through it and it shot flawlessly. Hopefully I can run it through a real test this weekend and see how it goes. A few of my friends have the SD40 and loved them so it was an easy choice for me as they are affordable and reliable from my point of view.

Daniel

I have the sd40 ‘ve it would not feed on the first round because the spring in the magazine had to be broken in after that I fired over 500 rnds and it shoots fine, I just picked up the sd9 ‘ve yesterday and the same thing happen the spring has to be broken in I used my auto loader and kept popping the rounds out until the spring loosen up .

Demetric

Had my sdve40 about a year now it’s a great gun!!!

VerbalHamRadio

I’ve owned the sd9 ve for about 3 months now and put about 1200 rounds through it. It’s my first gun and all the research I did pointed to this being a great gun for first timers and for the price, it has been a champ. I’ve put federal 115 aluminums through it mostly at the range, but have done some Winchester 115 and Blazer brass rounds as well. Only jams were when my 60 year old mom was racking it trying to shoot it. She has weak hands, wasn’t giving it enough muscle and it jammed one time. This… Read more »

Just bought the sd9ve on 11-17-2015 bought a box of 100 fmj and fired all of them . Final thoughts: love this gun have used many others this is my cc from now on and will continue to buy . Wife is buying one in a few days

trap

Could they take extended magazines

Kirk Blakesley

I have both the SD40VE and SD9VE. I have put a variety of ammo through them both. Cheap and High dollar. No issues AT ALL. I carry a Glock 23, Gen IV at work, and quite honestly prefer my S&W’s! Not sure where all the issues listed in this forum are coming from. Maybe I just got lucky. Funny part is, my wife and son don’t have any issues with theirs either. Bought two of them for $289, and the other two for $319 at Academy. Plug for Academy, have purchased 9 guns from them…nobody beats their prices. Hands down!

Skip

cdnnsports… BEST prices I’ve found anywhere for just about anything my SD9VE was $289 and extra magazines @ 29.99 compared to $34 – $40 everywhere else. Haven’t shot this one yet but I can’t wait!

Kevin

*melissa after roughly 3000 rounds guide assembly should be replaced. I own both sd40 ve and sd9 ve…love them both, no problems

melissa

I have owned a sd40 for about 6 months and have put about 5000 rounds through it and up until recently had no problems. Now every time I shoot it the slide goes back to far causing the barrel to get stuck on the front of the slide, would a bad recoil spring cause this?

chad

I have 200 rounds through mine. Not a single failure. The one hiccup I have had compared to other pistols is that you must completely pull the slide back and release it. It does not easily ch but a round compared to most handguns that I own/have shot

Justin Cruze

It is amazing, just how much this gun gets hated on. I had the priveledge of owning an SW40VE until it was stolen. I used it as a duty piece. I did have a few FTF, however, it was not regular. I’d say, 10 issues for every 2000 rounds(many different manufacturers), is reasonably reliable. I now own the SD40VE. I have had a couple of FTF out of maybe 300-400 rounds, but, more than likely it is an issue with my grip or the ammo. Many of the negative comments on here, stem from arrogance(it could never have been anything… Read more »

Just bought my S&W SD40 its my first handgun. After reading different comments on this gun I cant wait to shoot it and see how it does. I bought a box of Blazer Brass ammo 165gr FMJ. Has anyone tried this ammo,if so how did it do?

Kevin

I run blazer 180 gr with my sd40ve…aluminum casing…600 rounds n no probs

Tommy Carlson

I have had my S&W SD9 VE for about 6 months. I have put about 500 rounds of FEDERAL 9MM LUGER 115 Grain FMJ through it. I have not had any problems with it. It shoots good in all weather conditions.

Frank L

I bought a SD9 VE a couple months ago. Out of the box it double-fed every 3 to 5 rounds with both magazines. I’ve put about 200 rounds thru it and tried different ammo without any improvement.

Trying to remove the slide isn’t as easy as others have claimed – even for the experts at the gun range.
It’s in process of being sent to S&W for eval / repair.

Brian

There are a number of ridiculous comments above that seem like they were written by grade schoolers. I’m buying an sd40 in two days only because EVERY ounce of research I’ve done on them claims they’re great, reliable guns. Literally, I’ve read a hundred articles by gun review guys who all rave about this gun chewing up any ammo you throw in it with 0 failure.

Phillip

I’d put my p97dc and s&w sd40ve up against any firearm of YOUR choice.. Mine have been flawless..

Ben

Picked up my second SD40VE today. Took it to the range with some of my very cheap flat nose reloads. I ripped 50 rounds with not one snag. Feels perfect runs perfect very accurate (once you learn your weapon). I was in love with Glocks before I made the switch to S&Ws (I’ve got a 21) it’s still nice but this thing runs as good if not better and it was 300$ good luck getting a Glock that’s not a beat to hell Service turn in. It’s lightweight and smooth operation has made this SD40 my go to CC.

william wesley

Now for the non paid comment. I just bought the S&W SD9 VE and after shoot 10 rounds, all but two jam. That was with those same wonderful Winchester 115 gr in the big white box. Even after a good clean and oil it was still jamming. Thinking of buying? Reconsider….

Frank L

I had the same problem with double feeds every 3 to 5 rounds, and with both magazines! Tried different ammo and that didn’t make any difference – still double fed after 200 rounds…. Trying to remove the slide isn’t easy either, even for the experts at the gun range.
It’s in process of return thru the store to S&W.

edward paynter

I have an sdve 9mm I have shot a lot still no jams even with hollowpoints

evans

I’ve had my sd9 for a couple of months now and I have fired number of rounds and no problem at all great gun thx s&w

naenae

Got a sd40 ve for my birthday and so far love it already killed a 4 1/2 ft rattlesnake with price was great love the grips and recoil isn’t bad at all easy for a ccl

AL

Will the SD9 VE fire ZQI 23 grain 9mm Nato Spec ammo. I heard Nato spec ammo was hard on a gun due to higher pressure. The box sys 23 grain, and I got it from Walmart for $12.99 a 50 rd box.

Rik

Does anyone know anything about the universal pistol to rifle conversion kits? If so with the.s&w sd40ve work with them? All i can find are the kits for glocks.

Dennis Miller

I have a sd9 ve best gun ive had in years it shoots dead on every time never seen a pistol more accurate ever. Its easy to take downand clean but far as that gos it will shoot dirty it dont care it will eat anything I feed it never jammed even dirty. I got my wife one also same story gr8 gun. I recommend this gun highly and for the ones talking bad about it you just dont know guns. And far as the one guy saidtigger pin came out I can tell himwhy it did im betting he… Read more »

I have been using a S&W SD40VE for over a year. The only problem I had was the trigger spring which I replaced making the trigger pull at 4.5 to 5 lbs. and very smooth. I would not trade it for anything.

S&W SD40 VE Pistol

mike

i bought my sd9ve about 5 months ago, and since then have put around 5000 round through it all different kinds of ammo with different loads, different brands, and all, and have had only one issue, and that was i kept running out of ammo. Bummer i know. i love this gun trigger is perfect (my opinion) easy to handle very light. if i could go back to that day and buy a gun i would buy the sd9ve every single time.

praj4144

Hi Kirk,
My husband has the SD9VE and I wanted to get him an IWB holster for his birthday.
He likes to carry in his back, is there a good holster you’d recommend for the SD9VE?

Thanks!!!!!

Jose

I Bought an s&w sd9 ve……. Daaaaaaa best gun i owned next to the glock 23 believe me I been thru a few thousands rounds more like 5000 rounds And no f/><# ups …….I go to the range and show the sd9 no love or remorse by firing it like an A/k and it dont back down The sd9 ve is a high 10 for home and self defense

Joe Chiz

The wife and I went out to shoot our sd40ve’s yesterday (I purchased 2 of these guns. The first time the wife fired her gun, it jammed. About 3-4 months later, we went to the range again. The second time my wife fired her weapon, the round exploded and shrapnel came out of the chamber and hit my wife in her upper lip. Had to go to the emergency room. Half of her upper lipped is burned and she also has a big whole from where the ER pulled a 1/4″ piece of sharpnel out of her lip. Crazy!! I… Read more »

bought a little over a yr ago, sd40ve, can’t say enough good things about this gun. No FTF, FTE, this thing has functioned flawlessly, and is a breeze to break down and clean.
use this for my HD and every day carry, I have no reason not to trust this gun with me and my family’s life.
Great Handgun.

Robert May

My girlfriend bought me the sd40ve for me for christmas this year and it is absolutly the best gun I have shot but I don’t use jackeded rounds but I have fired close to 500 rounds thru it not a single jam or messed up chambering of a round its a great gun and the recoil isn’t all that bad either great gun

DM

Just purchased the sd9ve a wk ago need to get to the range to check it out..

David leroy Helms II

How do I go about getting descounts on guns and hunthing cloths and other things cause i am a member of the hunter instructurs assocation

9mm

Purchased my SD9VE couple months now and have shot over 400 rounds with not a single jam. Trigger pulls great, who needs hairline, my patience is already a hairline trigger. No malfunctions and SD9 does not care if you clean it or not, you can fire 2000 rounds w/o cleaning and still fire like it is brand new. Recently got a 30 round mag and now clean it daily because I love the smell of oil on metal.

bella

where did you find the extended magazine for your sd9ve?

I bought a sd40 ve last weekend and have out about 250 rounds threw it and I have used flat nose and fmj with no issues. I would have to say for the price it is worth every penny.

Greg McClain

I have mixed feelings on the SD40 I own. I have put about 350 rounds through it and have had more jams than I would expect. I have only used flat nose ammo in it so I might try to find some round nose. The feed ramp is not good for flat nose and hallow point ammo. Other then that the gun feels good in my hand, easy to tare down and shoots ok. It was also a great price at Vance's in Columbus. It was around 275 and a little over 300 out the door. So how can you… Read more »

The Ghost

I purchased my SD9VE the week before Christmas and have put right at 500 flawless rounds through this weapon. I used to pass my CCW permit in TN hitting 48 of 50 shots on target. I love the feel and the trigger has really smoothed out well. I believe I got luck but my trigger tested on average between 6.5lbs & 7lbs out of the box. It eats everything I put through it and trust the weapon with my life… which is why it will be on my hip via the Little FoxX Hybrid Holster as soon I receive my… Read more »

I know its just a personal issue, but I cant stand glocks and glock wanna-be's. Sorry, pretty gun, but give me a 92FS 1911 or a desert eagle any day. Grats on your christmas, hope it was merry.

In Idaho

I bought a new SD9VE just before Christmas and have fired about 200 flawless rounds of Winchester white box 115's through it. I am very pleased with the accuracy and reliability thus far. If these first 200 rounds are an indication of things to come, then I am looking forward to owning and shooting this gun. At this point I would recommend anybody looking for a gun to seriously consider the SD9VE.

Tim Wolfe

Does anyone make a conversion kit to fire 9mm in the SD40 VE? I know they do for a M&P.

hillbilly

Picked up the 40 yesterday and put some federal round nose and Speer hollow point through it. No issues with either ammo, sights were right on. If you do your part it will do its part.

mwsd9

Just picked up the 9. 200 rounds 1 misfire. Had to be a bum round. ZPOI is a bit left. Sight is just off center. Still love it. Neverfear noons. Just buy it!

wild willy

I've shot over 500 rounds through my new sd9 without a single problem. Dead on aim, great feel, reasonable price. I would definetly recommend it to anyone.

Big boy 3621

I have. SD40VE and I put about 200rounds of blazer brass fmj 180 grain flat nose with no problems at all do far , I'm not a expert on guns This is my first one actually , I plan on buying more don't have a lot of money so I have to keep them in a low price range but I don't want junk either , any suggestions on hunting style rifles and decent 1911 , I do know they are quite costly but I want one doesnt have to be fancy.

LJ

If you looking to get a 1911, you can look at American Tactical. They make good solid guns for a very low price. Like anything else you will have good and bad things said about it,. I did my research, bought one for about 440 bucks, and I like mine. You do the homework and make a decision yourself. Good price and left me money in my pocket,

Brock W

Ihave the SD 40 VE hsd some FTF seny it in S&W switch out the barrel and now she shoots like a dream no prob anf for 299 out the door cant beat it i love the gun

CoreyG/Texas

OWN BOTH… I have put the far below BS number %age of rounds a person claims to put through their weapon. Usually with assault weapons people say "I have put THOUSANDS of rounds through my weapon" yea yea…. I have put literally the same amount of amount through both weapons and guess what… they both performed the exact same… No misfires, no failure to feeds, no jamz… The Police officers I know who carry these LOVE them. Of course we can argue about them being cheap clones of Glock 17/19s etc… but I have both of those to… perform wonderful…… Read more »

Hey, quit raging on the Glocks. I found 100 of them that had been destroyed, I melted them down and they make great door stops.

HaHaHa

I recently won the lottery and purchased 100 glocks and destroyed them so stupid people wouldn't buy them and get hurt with them, glocks are no good and should be taken off the market.

joe magnus

Really hahaha sounds to me like you just enjoy to trash talk glocks i have a s&w sd40ve and it shoots ok hasn’t jammed yet but have had some issues getting it to feed the first round sometimes so next time how about keeping your slander to a minimum your phony comments help no one.
