USA –-(Ammoland– It is common for gun tournaments around the country to be named after historical figures with whom the contestant can relate.

The Major Dade is named after Major Francis L. Dade, who, along 108 of his men, was massacred by Seminole Indians on the morning of December 28, 1835. This horrific encounter was the worst disaster the U.S. Army had experienced since its inception.

This horrific encounter was the worst disaster the U.S. Army had experienced since its inception. It was not until General George Custer, 40 years later, was defeated at Little Big Horn that more soldiers (268) were slaughtered in a single battle. The massacre vaulted Major Francis L. Dade into a prominent place in history and as the story of the battle grew, so did the legend. Both Dade County, Fl. and Dade City, Fl. are named in his honor. The Major Dade long rifle contest commemorates the fallen in this battle.

WHAT: A long rifle, “iron sight” only, competition will be held at Little Everglades Ranch in Dade City, Fl. One target, called Major Dade’s Revenge, will be placed at 650 yards. Success on this target automatically qualifies the shooter for the finals to be held on the third day of the event. The tournament will offer a purse of $30,000. $15,000 will go to the winner, and $15,000 will be divided by the next 9 highest scorers.
