WASHINGTON --(Ammoland.com)- Following this afternoon’s Senate vote confirming Sally Jewell as Secretary of the Interior, the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership welcomed Jewell’s appointment while underscoring the importance of her role administering the management of America’s vast network of public lands and resources.

“Secretary Jewell has called sportsmen ‘critical partners’ in assuring the responsible management and conservation of the nation’s natural resources,” said TRCP President and CEO Fosburgh.

“She understands that conservation equals jobs and that public lands fuel the recreation economy, including hunting and fishing. She knows that people need access to our lands and waters and that they want a quality experience at those places. Sportsmen appreciate these issues better than most.”

Activity related to hunting and fishing produces significant economic impact, and the sporting community is part of a recreation, natural resource conservation and historic preservation sector that generates more than $1 trillion for the U.S. economy every year. This sector also produces $107 billion in tax revenue annually and supports 9.4 million jobs. Learn more.

Jewell’s resume includes a dozen years with REI, including as its CEO, as well as two decades in banking and experience as an engineer for Mobil. Jewell has been a spokesperson for President Obama’s America’s Great Outdoors initiative, which promotes and supports community-level conservation efforts and reconnects Americans to the outdoors, particularly through acquisition of public lands, access to both public and private lands and conservation of fish and wildlife habitat. Jewell replaces outgoing Interior Secretary Ken Salazar.

“Whether it be fly fishing in a backcountry stream, waterfowl hunting in the Chesapeake Bay, stalking big game in the Rockies or bass fishing in Oklahoma’s Grand Lake o’ the Cherokees, our nation offers a diversity of outdoor opportunities that is unequaled,” Fosburgh concluded. “American sportsmen look forward to working with Secretary Jewell as she continues our nation’s commitment to conservation, which stretches back more than a century.”
