Maybe Chicago Should Ban Gangs, Not Guns

BELLEVUE, WA – -(Ammoland.com)- A call for banning so-called “assault weapons” in the wake of Thursday night’s shooting in a Chicago park, believed to be part of an ongoing war between two rival gangs, shows the Windy City needs to concentrate on banning gangs, not guns, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said today.

Police Supt. Garry McCarthy was quoted by Chicago reporters insisting that the shooting, which seriously wounded a 3-year-old boy, is ample proof that “assault weapons” should be banned.

But when the Chicago Tribune noted that police think the shooting was the latest episode of violence between the Gangster Disciples and the Black P. Stones, CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb said this puts the real problem in perspective.

“When you have street thugs opening fire on groups of people in a gang war,” he observed, “that suggests the city has not advanced much since the days of Al Capone and Bugs Moran. Law-abiding Chicago residents continue to face bureaucratic obstacles, wade through red tape and jump through hoops before they can legally own a gun, while criminals obviously don’t bother with any of that, and just drive around shooting people.

“If Superintendent McCarthy and his boss, Mayor Rahm Emanuel, want to make the streets safer,” he continued, “they should concentrate their efforts on ridding the city of its criminal element rather than push for bans on the kinds of firearms that are owned by millions of law-abiding Americans. Those citizens haven’t hurt anyone, and neither have their guns.

“McCarthy and his department could pull a little ‘Shock and Awe’ operation, one neighborhood at a time, rousting these thugs, arresting those who have outstanding warrants, jailing those found to be illegally carrying guns and sending a message to straighten up or you’re going down,” Gottlieb suggested. “It’s time for Chicago authorities to face the fact that they’re not going to get rid of their crime problem until they start getting rid of their criminals.”

With more than 650,000 members and supporters nationwide, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms is one of the nation’s premier gun rights organizations. As a non-profit organization, the Citizens Committee is dedicated to preserving firearms freedoms through active lobbying of elected officials and facilitating grass-roots organization of gun rights activists in local communities throughout the United States. 1. This is what I’ve been saying all along, get these wonderful young thugs of our city streets and just maybe we could reduce these street shootings by 50%, work a little harder and maybe 75%, but just banning “assault weapons” and you’ll have the same crap over and over. Get off your a**es and kick some butts.

    2. “McCarthy and his department could pull a little ‘Shock and Awe’ operation, one neighborhood at a time, rousting these thugs…”

Right, & then whine up a storm when they shock & awe gun owners after they ban guns. When will conservatives learn that the police are the enemy. They aren’t going to protect our gun rights, they’re the ones that are violating them. Remember Katrina? The solution to the crime problem is to end the war on drugs. It was the prohibition on alcohol that created gangs & the war on drugs that keeps them in business. The police state has had its chance & has failed to protect us. Lets try liberty now by going over to a system of private law & security.

    3. For some reason you people do not get it that it is not a bad thing that good blacks in the intercity should protect themselves? They need to do this to stop the gangs. Nothing else is going to work. There is nothing wrong with them protecting themselves just like there is nothing wrong for the rest of us from protecting ourselves.

    4. Chicago will never be anything but a cesspool because it is run by a criminal enterprise. As long as the city government is currupt the shootings will continue there. All they do is blame guns in spite of their draconian gun laws. From the mayor down they are on the take and have no real interest in making Chicago safer. The residents are pretty obtuse so I don’t see any change in how things are done so until if and when the residents wise up Chicago will be a gun free murder zone.

    5. Doing away with gangs seems to be a more common sense way of combating violence in the cities. These are the people that commit the violence, so common sense should tell a person to start there. Combating gangs will get rid of most of the illegal guns.
