Texas –-(Ammoland.com)- Folks – as much as I’d like to say we made these up – these are actually things that have been heard at a Local Gun Shop – I almost wish they were made up!

10 – You can rack this one much faster -as the sales person racks the slide on a Taurus 709 violently demonstrating the racking capability to a 65 year old elderly lady

9 – This clip is smaller so it won’t weigh as much – There is so much wrong with this statement – well actually 2 things – 1 while technically the “clip” will weigh less since it holds less, I wouldn’t say less bullets is a selling point for a self defense gun and 2 – its a f#*%^ing MAGAZINE!!!!!

8 – I want the FN Five-Seven – I used it on Counter Strike and it has armor piercing bullets – for one – which LGS carries the Five-Seven and more importantly what idiot uses video games to decide which gun to purchase?

7 – You don’t want that 1911 – its over 100 years old you need something more modern – now while this isn’t going to be a Glock vs 1911 argument (because we already did that one) I would not go so far to say the 1911 is stupid because its 100 years old – its tried and tested and perhaps one of the best designs ever made!

6 – Yea you can shoot these .40 S&W’s out of your .45 – as long as the number is smaller it will work – WTF seriously – Can’t make this up – where do gun stores find these idiots?!?!

5 – This new Remington AR-15 is the best deer hunting rifle out there – Now I’m not here to argue the fact that a) Remington makes a nice rifle (Model 700) or b) the .223 CAN in the right hands be a very good deer hunting round – HOWEVER – claiming an AR-15 is the best round for deer hunting and THEN claiming the Remington is the BEST option out there – thats just foolish!

4 – You want this here Sig – its the same gun that the SEALs use – Right – because I plan on jumping out of a helicopter and swimming across an ocean to rescue some hostages aboard a boat full of pirates.  Why not talk about some of the other great features of the gun – oh wait – maybe the “SEALs” line is the only positive feature.

3 – I once killed a deer at XXXX yards with this model – its the best one out there – I’m sure everyone has heard some variation of this story.  It’s the same guy that goes to Bass Pro and talks about his 45lb bass that he caught off this new lure.  2 words – BULL – SHIT.

2 – These Hornady Zombie Rounds are your best options when the apocalypse comes – oh yea Sherlock – what kind of research are you basing that off of?

And the Number 1 Stupidest Thing Overheard at a Local Gun Store:

This Glock is the easiest gun to clean – you can just put it in the dishwasher! Well technically that is true – I wouldn’t consider that the selling point so to speak!

@ Steve, clips can be used in both handguns and rifles……..ditto for magazines. The broomhandle mauser pistol uses clips to reload it, the 1911A1 and many other semi auto pistols use magazines. The M1 Garand rifle uses en bloc clips to reload it and the AR’s, AK’s and other similar rifles use magazines! Sometimes I stop in at the LGS and just browse near the counter and listen to the clerks. Most of them are knowledgable but some come up with some really crazy crap sometimes!

Kurt – Thanks for the UTube. I do know the diff between Clip and Mag. After fighting with and modifying a Lee Enfield (English) magazine I bought as a spare for my father’s (American) Enfield, found out I could have just obtained some clips. Never hurts to have operational spares!! Now to locate some clips!!!

Jordan said: 1) He needs to go back to secondary school and learn his English grammar. “Less bullets”. Really? OK, this is actually a grammatical error, 2) So he thinks 65 is ‘elderly’? He’ll think again before long, if he’s lucky. I am willing to BET it was clear the lady couldn’t rack ANY weapon quickly. 3) It’s a ‘clip’, not something we read. But you call it what you want, and I’ll do the same. The PROPER term is magazine. A ‘clip’ is used to link rounds for a BELT-fed weapon, but you are free to misuse terms. 4)… Read more »

I heard a salesman at a gander mtn awhile back tell a guy he rolled a deer at 700 yds with that rifle and when I looked back it was a inline 50 cal. muzzleloader. I busted out laughing .

This is not my content but a good review of “clip” vs “magazine” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoSNHe413rY

During Marine Corps OCS, I often took my M16 with me into the shower after field exercises. Made getting ready for inspection a lot faster.

The FUNNIEST thing I heard in a gunshop was a lady who was looking at a compact .38 Special, which looked sort of like a Model 36 Smith and Wesson. She asked the dealer, “Do you have it in pink?” He responded, joking: “No, but I can order you one!” Little did I know back then that they would make something similar in colors in just a couple of years!!

tom

what end do you point? does the thing come out this end?

“…Stupidest..”? Lets try something “Number 1 most stupid line we have heard…” “number one most idiotic phrase we have heard..”

It might be interesting to see some of the more positive things we’ve heard in gun stores too. I’m sure most of us have had very good experiences in our LGS. When I was an undergraduate in college I taught my (to be) wife to shoot, and particularly, to handle guns safely. When she went into a sporting goods store with her mother (who hated me, BTW) a clerk handed her an unfamiliar pistol with the action closed. She refused to take it and asked him to open the action, which he did. My mother-in-law (to be) made a big… Read more »

To Bill, The AR-15 round could be several, really. The best known is the .556 NATO round. It is similar to the .223 round, but there is a difference. A rifle designed to shoot the .223 is not able to shoot the .556. Those designed for the .556 can shoot either round. There is a slight difference in the necks of the two bullets. Where I live, any round .22 or smaller is not legal to use for deer hunting. Not to say that even a regular .22 hasn’t taken down a deer, but your chances are remote, unless you… Read more »

ill have to agree with the comments made on the .40 in a .45, this is just plain irresponsible, trading someones safety to make a sale, if I were ever told that id have to insist they try it first!!and as for the 1911 comment I use my springfield 1911 for my everyday carry gun for the simple fact that it is a proven weapon with out fail! thanks for posting this I truly enjoyed it!!

James

Thanks…I got a real laugh out of reading these comments. Seriously though, customers shopping should first check out all the information possible on the weapon of choice before walking into a store. Secondly, gun stores need to train their staff on all the guns they stock and not yield to these kind of craziness. Integrity is important in this business.

I loved it when I walked into one of these big new gun stores and a 20-something semi-cute chickie counter clerk wearing camo and a sidearm started talking to me all macho-style about what I should be buying. I didn’t bother to tell her I was out hunting with a machinegun before her Mama was born. “Just window shopping,” said I.

Scott

when I bought my Rock Island Officer sized model from Cabela’s back in October, the guy working the counter had no idea on any information on the gun…other than it was Rock Island…He seemed to be offended that I knew more than he did. FYI I am 35 and he was probably 55

MJ

It would be hard for any sale person at a big box gun store to know everything about every fire arm in stock. That can be said for other type of big box store also. I bet it you asked the sales person for info on the type of gun he has he would probably know more than you do about it. When someone is going to purchase a gun most will do a lot of research and comparison vis online forums and blogs. I just go to the gunshop to physically handle to gun to see how well it… Read more »

6 – Yea you can shoot these .40 S&W’s out of your .45 – as long as the number is smaller it will work.

This bit of stupidity actually saved a persons life when the ignorant dirtbag perp of an armed robbery tried to shoot his victim, only to have the gun misfire. The police opened the revolver to find that the moron had shoved TWO .22LR rimfire cartridges in each chamber.

James

I loved the dishwasher comment. When I was in the army, 20 members of my unit cleaned our companies weapons in two days. We used solvent, a shower, a air compressor, and a drill. Usually it took at least three cleaning to say that they were cleaned, but they were the cleanest weapons I’ve seen, to include new weapons.

crazy me

I wash my 10mm glock in a dishwasher every month then i boll it in cold water to take the grease off the sites. Is there any more i should do to keep it new??

Bill

” claiming an AR-15 is the best round for deer hunting and THEN claiming the Remington is the BEST option out there – thats just foolish!”

What, exactly, is an “AR-15 round”?

rjtaurus605

My favorite thing I have ever heard in a gun shop was ” But I answered the questions truthfully” as the sheriff was putting the cuffs on him, he had told the truth when he answered the question ” Is there an active warrant for your arrest”…….

Jordan

As for Bagger Dubs and his personal opinions…. 1) He needs to go back to secondary school and learn his English grammar. “Less bullets”. Really? 2) So he thinks 65 is ‘elderly’? He’ll think again before long, if he’s lucky. 3) It’s a ‘clip’, not something we read. But you call it what you want, and I’ll do the same. 4) As for shooting .40’s out of a .45…why not educate folks instead of cursing them and calling them idiots. I suppose you were born with all knowledge? 5) #3 is the sort of bragging I’d expect from people like… Read more »

I was Gunsmith 50 yrs.You could never believe some of the STUPID I’ve heard !!

AJ Jensen

Any gun shop should fire an employee on the spot who recommends non-compatible ammunition. That’s idiocy in the purest ray serene. I guess the same guy would tell me I can load .357 revolver rounds into a 1911 ACP? Hey why not, the NUMBER IS SMALLER.

Buck Crosby

There are azzholes in every field , but I blame the people that actually hire them . look what we got when we elected a president that NO ONE vetted .

5alive5

The 1911 is tried n true is a correct statement but I wouldn’t recommend it to a person with arthritic hands, especially for self defense. I have problems squeezing the safety on a 1911 and that could cause problems. I didn’t like it when I was in the army from 68 to 74 because of the safety.

Paul

Where do they get these people from, first grade. If I was going to be going hunting I would use the Remington model 700 that for me would be the best either that or I would use bow and arrow.

John Burtt

These are great. Just goes to show you how we all need to be able to step around the piles of BS even at a gun store!

Dr. Strangelove

A LGS salesman said “Sorry” once when I asked him not to set the pistol on the counter pointing at me.
