Washington DC - -(Ammoland.com)-  Following the heinous crime at Sandy Hook Elementary in December 2012, Democrats planned to turn 2013 into the year of gun control.

But thanks to the efforts of law-abiding gun owners, the new media, Fox News, and the NRA, 2013 turned into the year of the gun.

It began with a surge in gun sales across the country in the first quarter of 2013, driven by the concern that President Obama and Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) would succeed in passing gun control in the wake of the Sandy Hook school shooting. This surge contributed to a record-breaking year that eventually totaled 21,093,273 background checks for gun purchasers.

The push for gun control was at its apex during the months January through April–a time in which Americans flocked to the NRA in record numbers. By February, Quinnipiac University reported that more Americans agreed with the NRA versus Obama by a margin of 46 to 43 percent.

Federal gun control went down in flames on April 17 2013. Meanwhile, on May 3 2013, the NRA announced it had reached over five million members.

While these things were happening at the federal level, states were witnessing record-breaking levels for concealed carry applications. In 2013, Florida became the first state to hit one million legally armed, concealed carry citizens; Kansas saw their concealed carry applications rise 54 percent over 2012 application levels; and Virginia broke a 24-year old record for gun sales.

Moreover, two thirds of the gun laws passed at the state level during 2013 were designed to decrease, rather than increase, gun control.

This disparity between the push for gun control on the federal level and attempts to stifle gun control on the state level was indicative of a year-long pattern, where we saw gun control receiving less and less support the closer the debate got to the people.

This was typified by the Colorado recalls on September 10th, which succeeded in removing state Senators John Morse (D-Colo Springs) and Angela Giron (D-Pueblo) from office over their support for gun control. It was also evident in the defeat Mike Bloomberg and Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG) suffered on November 5 in Virginia, when NRA-backed delegates defeated MAIG-backed delegates 65 to 2. On that same day, the citizens in Chambersburg, PA booted their mayor out of office because of his support of MAIG.

Throughout the year, the new media and Fox News kept shining a light on the truth behind Senator Joe Manchin’s gun control push–the reality that gun registration would be required to make his “expanded background checks” enforceable.

By the time the year was over, instead of looking back at the passage of gun control, we were looking back at the release of great pistols like the Ruger SR45, Sig Sauer P224, Glock 30S, Sig Sauer P226 SAO, Taurus Millennium G2 9mm, and Springfield XDS 9mm, as well as great AR-15 rifles from Smith & Wesson, Daniel Defense, Bushmaster, and others.

    1. My favorite things about 2013:

      1. The Open Carry movement exploded with demonstrations at Starbucks and the Alamo

      2. We passed several pro-gun laws all over the country

      3. Concealed carry permit and gun sales went through the roof

      4. More people than ever are members of the NRA

The future looks good, but the war is far from over.

    2. Good News…However…Don’t turn your back on the CommieCRats who sit in your State Senate…
Coloradans did just that…And look what happened…We have a Universal Back Ground Check system because the CommieCRats didn’t think the Federal NCIC sytem was adequate enough to stop crimnals from obataining gun…Fact…Since Gov. Hickenlooper passed these new anti-guns laws…Gun violence has gone up in Colorado…Testimony of this is the Arapahoe school shooting…Gov. Hickenlooper took Nancy Pelosi for her words…He never bother to read the laws before he signed them…Coloradans have found out Hickloopers anti-gun laws were some of the most arrogant, stupid and frivolous gun laws ever to disgrace the history of Colorado!

    3. Gun Control Laws: There is a lot of research that’s been done on this subject. But here, let me help you out in an easier format. Washington, D.C., New York City, Chicago Illinois, Detroit Michigan………what do they all have in common? 3 things. 1. Very restrictive or completely banned use of handguns/CCW. 2. Much higher rates of violent crimes/murders than other cities/areas with far less restrictive CCW/gun laws. See how easy that is? Oh, here’s another one for you. Every last mass shooting in the US in the last decade has occurred where? That’s right…..GUN FREE ZONES. You can preach and do all this hypothetical research all you want and talk about coincidences and correlations and all your other bologna nonsense that you seem to think makes you sound intelligent. 3. All the above cities and all high crime cities have been run and are filled with Democrats and have been for decades, a FACT that no one can deny! Why don’t people see what they are doing is not working? Bottom line is anywhere you go in this country with more restrictive gun laws, you will find more violent crime and murder rates than less restrictive areas. That fact you simply cannot deny. And if you try to, I want to see actual factual numbers supporting this. Not some BS numbers some researcher came up with in his study at the University. Actual crime statistic numbers. Go ahead and tackle that one, genius.

    4. Gun control..never works out right for citizens. Look at what the Bolshevik Zionist did to millions of Russians in the 20s and thirties (killed them). What the Germans did to 10 million people…I could go on and on…but it all followed gun registration and confiscation…Couldn’t happen here? It is in NYC as I type.

    5. The NRA had nothing to do with the Virginia election, other than making a few words and contributing a pittance to the cause. The VCDL was the one doing the real work. In the past, the only thing the NRA has done is screw over Virginians and get anti-gun fools elected. The NRA does a fair job on the national circuit but they need to butt out in Virginia politics.
