Thanks to the hard work of GRNC supporters like you, a new pro-gun law goes into effect today. Also, you have scored two victories in the fight against WRAL’s misleading anti-gun reporting …
Raleigh, NC -(Ammoland.com)- Great news! North Carolina gun owners don’t have to wait until December 25th to receive outstanding gifts. It’s past December 1st and there is already some great stuff under the tree.
Provisions of HB562 Take Effect Today
Beginning today, December 1, 2015, NC Sheriffs will no longer be able to so easily deny pistol permits to citizens because the sheriff may think the citizen is not of “good moral character.” Yes, that little gem is actually written into the statute for issuing pistol permits and is, in fact, a throwback to the Jim Crow era. Going forward, a sheriff cannot use minor, non-disqualifying events, from further than five years back in an applicant’s history, to disqualify the otherwise qualified citizen from receiving a permit. This change is due to provisions from HB562 which are taking effect today.
WRAL Pays the Price
As you know, WRAL-TV recently broadcast an anti-gun hit piece. Their piece, which broadcast untruths about obtaining NFA weapons, was entirely misleading. In fact, a lawyer who was interviewed for the piece specifically complained afterwards that WRAL had taken his words out of context, and the information that he had given the reporter.
GRNC asked its supporters to contact a couple of WRAL’s advertisers and let them know that, if they want continued patronage from gun owners, they ought not send their advertising dollars to WRAL—in any form. Your insistence paid off!
Both Leith Nissan and Overton’s heard what you had to say, and strongly agreed!
We have been informed that both companies have contacted WRAL-TV, and have asked that their establishments no longer be associated with the station.
Danny Williams, manager at Leith Nissan, sent the following message to WRAL:
Hi Laura,
Wanted to follow up with you on this story we spoke about, as I explained we cannot support a station that runs a story that is misleading especially as you even indicated the lead ins were. We Disapprove on the WRAL biased reporting on the 2nd amendment issues and cannot support that with advertising. You mentioned you would ask your news team about them running a follow up to show the other sides facts….did you have any luck with them agreeing to do that?
I appreciate your understanding and allowing us to cancel our current sponsorship and perhaps could look at it again in the future if the followup does run.
Thank You
Danny Williams
Also note, to their further credit, Leith has pointed out that none of its dealerships are posted against guns, and they intend to keep it that way.
For listening to their customers, supporting gun rights, and for disassociating themselves with the anti-gun hit reports coming out of WRAL:
Leith Nissan & Overton’s both deserve our praise—and our business.
Please Thank Leith Nissan and Overton’s
Indeed, Leith Nissan and Overton’s deserve praise for their quick action, and their courage. Below, see how you can send a quick note to the two companies. Also, now that we know that they were willing to stand up to WRAL, GRNC strongly encourages its supporters to consider Leith Nissan for your next car or truck purchase, and Overton’s for your water sports gear and supplies.
Send a Message to WRAL
Below, see how you can send a message to Laura Stillman, at WRAL. They have suggested that, to fix their mistake, they may run a follow up piece to present the other side (the truth) of this story. Let’s encourage her to follow through on that.

Dear Mr. Williams:
I recently sent you a note to criticize your company’s support of WRAL-TV through its advertising. As you probably know, WRAL had broadcast, and posted online, an anti-gun hit piece that was untruthful. It was an affront to gun owners and to anyone who supports Second Amendment rights. It didn’t seem sensible that a company like yours would be associated with such a thing, and I wrote to insist that you pull your advertising from WRAL.
I was just informed that your company has contacted WRAL to ask that Leith Nissan’s ads, in any form, not be displayed on WRAL’s website or other media. I am absolutely elated to hear this, and I want to pass along a big, thank you! Thank you for listening, and thank you for standing up for what’s right!
I am so glad that your establishment has made this decision, and I can assure you that Leith Nissan will be at the top of my list the next time I am shopping for a car or truck. Thanks again!
Sincerely,

“Run an ‘NFA Weapons’ Correction Piece”
Dear Ms. Stillman,
I understand that you have suggested that WRAL-TV may run a follow up piece to the “NFA Weapons” piece that was broadcast and posted online last week. As you are now aware, the original report was inaccurate, and I’ve also seen that Drew Dempster, a lawyer interviewed for the piece, has complained that his words were misconstrued.
I must insist that you do indeed run the follow up piece you are contemplating in order to set the record straight. This other side of the story would, in fact, be a correction to the misleading information that had been presented in the initial piece. It would seem that revising incorrect information would be critical to a news source maintaining its integrity.
I am aware that you’ve lost revenue from at least two advertisers over last week’s misleading piece. I, and others, are watching WRAL’s actions on this, and if a corrective piece is not run, we intend to inform more of WRAL’s sponsors of the situation.
Run a follow up to the “NFA Weapons” piece, and allow the experts to correct the record. For this, I would encourage you to contact Paul Valone, President of Grass Roots North Carolina.
Respectfully,
