In today’s unpredictable world, preparing for an SHTF (Shit Hits The Fan) scenario is not just wise; it’s essential.

We have all seen the insanity of today’s America. The final battle is coming this November. Are you ready to defend yourself and your family in any situation? That’s why it’s crucial to have a well-rounded arsenal that addresses various potential threats, from personal safety to larger-scale civil unrest. Let’s break down the five categories of firearms you should consider, adding specific gun models for each category to help you make informed decisions.

Handgun: The Versatile Defender

A quality handgun is indispensable. It’s your sidekick—concealable, light, and a reliable backup when all else fails. For robust performance without compromising concealability, I recommend the Glock 19. This semi-automatic pistol offers a balance of size and firepower with a standard 15-round capacity, which can be crucial in a high-stress encounter. Its 9mm caliber is effective yet manageable, and the widespread availability of Glock parts and accessories makes it a practical choice. For those in bear country, consider beefing up to a Glock 20 in 10mm, which offers more stopping power.

Defensive Rifle: Your Primary Powerhouse

When it comes to defending your homestead, a rifle like the AR-15 is non-negotiable. Its versatility and reliability make it a top pick for any prepper. The AR-15, particularly models like the PSA PA-15 Classic AR-15 5.56 M4 Carbine, provides excellent ergonomics and customization options to suit your specific needs. The standard 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge is effective for most self-defense situations. If your tactics might include longer ranges or a more powerful punch, consider stepping up to an AR-10 platform to utilize the .308 Winchester round, which offers greater reach and impact.

22 Long Rifle: The Quiet Contender

For small game hunting and low-profile defense, a .22 LR platform is invaluable. The Ruger 10/22 is a standout in this category, known for its reliability and ease of use. It allows you to carry large quantities of ammunition without being weighed down, which is ideal for hunting small game or discreet defense. It’s also an economical choice, allowing you to stockpile rounds without breaking the bank.

Hunting Rifle: The Long-Range Provider

For larger game and long-distance threats, a robust hunting rifle is essential. The Remington 700, in a .308 Winchester, is a stellar choice. It’s not only great for hunting but can serve as an effective sniper rifle, offering accuracy and power at range. If you’re in denser terrain, consider a lever-action rifle like the Winchester Model 94 in .30-30, which offers faster follow-up shots and sufficient power for medium-sized game.

Shotgun: The Close-Quarter Guardian

In close quarters, a shotgun’s stopping power is unmatched. The Mossberg 500 Shotgun variants are all reliable, versatile firearms that can handle various types of ammunition, from birdshot for hunting to buckshot and slugs for serious defense. While shotguns have limitations in range and ammunition weight, their effectiveness in a home defense scenario or when hunting for food is unparalleled.

Each of these firearms has a role in a well-prepared arsenal, ready to tackle different challenges that may come your way in a SHTF scenario. Remember, it’s not just about having these tools; it’s also about training with them to ensure you can handle whatever life throws your way efficiently and safely. Stay armed, stay ready, and keep defending freedom.

IMO, one needs not four firearms but five. One of each basic type. A shotgun, a rimfire rifle and pistol, and a centerfire rifle and handgun.
It should be a top five list. People like five and ten better than the other numbers anyway. The interesting debate is on exactly which five to choose. And as always, there will be a lot of differing opinions. About as many as there are people participating! 🙂

Evidently the author agrees with you, since he listed the five you mentioned.

All except for a rimfire handgun. That’s why he ends up with 4 instead of 5. I do have to agree, if one must par this list down to 4, it would be the rimfire pistol that would have to go. As much as I use them for pests around the homestead, in an emergency the rimfire rifle can do the job just as well. Not as convenient, but just as good(or better). His 4 choices are all good ones too. I choose a double shotgun over a pump or semi-auto, and .270 Win over the .308, but those are… Read more »

I’m a huge fan of .300 Blackout too, mine is never too far away from wherever I am at. I have a pair of Ruger M77 Mark II’s chambered in .270 & .300 WinMag. I don’t know which one I’d take in a SHTF moment, what was it you said about 2 of everything? I have 2 .40 caliber handguns that would be a must. I also think about ammo. I had a .40 caliber AR platform from Thureon Defense but it was a finicky eater which made it worthless for this kind of application. I might build one, because… Read more »

You nailed it better than the author. I once bought a book “1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die.” Any one of us could write “101 Guns You Should Own in Case the SHTF.”

Simple excellent article. The SHTF scenario will happen, perhaps not full blown, but when the government, NGO’s, & Eco-terrorists enforce *electrification* across the board, a prolonged blackout (pun intended) will see roving gangs of looting thugs doing all sorts of mayhem. The Police will be protecting politicians, government buildings & infrastructure; thugs & looters won’t both these people or locations but your neighborhood is ripe for the taking. What do I want/need for my SHTF dooms-week? On my person, at least one 9mm semi-auto, backing up a big bore 44 mag revolver. One high-capacity (15 rounds) 12 gauge pump shotgun,… Read more »

Boston T Party covered this years ago in his book “Boston’s Gun Bible.” Although somewhat dated, it is still a great reference.

are the new Remington Arms offerings up to snuff on quality? I hear they come with Timney triggers in them that are adjustable but how about the rest of the rifle?
