Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus & PAC Reiterates Opposition To Universal Background Check Bill.
SAINT PAUL, MINN – -(Ammoland.com)- The Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus & Political Action Committee, following the visit of former US Representative Gabby Giffords to Minnesota calling for more gun control laws, reiterates its opposition to the metro DFL driven Latz/Schoen universal background check bill and calls for a shift in focus to laws that punish violent criminals.
“It’s obvious that while calling for bipartisan support for their gun control measures that only a small subset of DFL Senators and Representatives support these sort of ineffective measures that punish law-abiding gun owners, ” said Bryan Strawser, Executive Director. “This was demonstrated clearly during last week’s Senate Judiciary Committee where the examples cited by law enforcement and prosecutors were crimes that would never have been stopped by this sort of law.”
The Latz/Schoen universal background check bill is being pushed and marketed by “Everytown” and “Moms Demand Action,” out-of-state funded and led organizations whose costs are underwritten by former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
“It is long past time that those truly interested in addressing gun violence turn their attention away from the failed gun control strategies of the past, and begin to focus on violent criminals instead of law-abiding citizens, ” added Rob Doar, Political Director. “For example, an October 2015 article by Minnesota Public Radio revealed that fewer than half of the people found to illegally possess a firearm receive the minimum sentence of 60 months in prison.”
“Despite claims today of widespread public support for this sort of registration bill, our polling indicates that 95 percent of gun owners in Minnesota are opposed to this type of legislation, ” added Strawser. “We will continue oppose this bill strongly and will encourage our supporters to address it with their Representatives and Senators.”
