Multiple Customers with Guns Stop Armed Robbery at Ideal Mart

U.S.A.-(AmmoLand.com)-— According to Ellijay Police, on January 9, 2023, at about 6:30 p.m., Shawn Sutton, 39 years old and a convicted felon, posed as a customer ready to purchase an energy drink at the Ideal Mart on at 31 Old Northcutt Road in Ellijay Georgia.

Ellijay is the county seat of Gilmer County, Georgia, about 60 miles north of Atlanta. Gilmer County was founded in 1832 on the junction of the Coosawattee River and the Etowah River. It is a thriving rural county with 31,000 residents.

There were two real customers and a store clerk inside the Ideal Mart with Sutton. Outside, there was one customer at the gas pump. Melody Sutton, Shawn’s wife, was in a parked car outside the store.

The suspect, Shawn Sutton, obtained the energy drink, then pulled a pair of women’s panties from around his neck to cover his face. Sutton went behind the counter and pointed a .45 caliber handgun at the head of the clerk. Sutton demanded all the money.

One of the customers produced his concealed firearm and intervened. The other customer went outside to retrieve his pistol from his vehicle and returned to help subdue Sutton. The third armed customer at the gas pumps came inside to assist as Sutton was attempting to leave. The first armed customer told the other two armed customers not to shoot Sutton, as Sutton had been disarmed.

At this point in time, law enforcement officers arrived at the scene.  It was 6:36 p.m. Sutton was still attempting to leave. One officer ordered the suspect to get down. Sutton did not comply. The officer used a Taser to engage the suspect, who was then taken into custody. As other officers arrived on the scene, one of them discovered Melody Sutton in the parked car. She was taken into custody without incident. The couple was from Blue Ridge, Georgia. Blue Ridge is 18 miles northeast of Ellijay on the Zell Miller Mountain Parkway.

Officers from three departments, Ellijay, East Ellijay, and the Gilmer County Sheriff’s office, all responded to the 911 call, arrived at the scene, and assisted in taking the suspects into custody.

Shawn Sutton is charged with one count of Armed Robbery, one count of Aggravated Assault, and one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. Shawn and Melody Sutton are being held without bond.

Georgia became a member of the Constitutional (permitless) Carry club on April 12, 2022. Georgia became the 25th state where no permit is necessary for a law-abiding person to carry a loaded firearm, openly or concealed. No permit was required in 1791 when the Second Amendment was ratified.

Opinion:

Armed robbery is a dangerous occupation in the middle of an armed population. The armed customers demonstrated good situational awareness, discipline, cooperation, and restraint. The police and armed citizens worked together to resolve a dangerous situation and take a felon into custody. When the population and police trust each other and work together, low crime rates are the result.

Dean, you have to stop inventing these stories. I have been informed many times by the MSM, politicians, various bureaucrats and studies by anti gun violence organizations that defensive gun use never happens

(sarcasm in case anyone misses the point)

Those citizens were just lucky. The bad guy was armed with a full auto machine clip that can vaporize people by shooting 100 mags a second. No one except the Prez’s bodyguards should be able to have those things.

Finnky

Just how many mags in a clip, or was it clips in a mag?

Yes I know one stripper clip to load most milsurps (mosin, sks, 1911, K98, Garand) or three clips to load a standard rifle mag. Only one I’m aware of in which clip goes in the magazine is the Garand (could be wrong about that as well).

And be sure to get your thumb out of the way or else…Garand Thumb. Fortunately it isn’t catching and you won’t need a vaccine to get it to heal.

Really ?
In combat with your unprotected ears full of the sounds of combat and the enemy yards and yards away you think someone is going to hear that ping and recognize it ??

Stop with the old bs fake war story.

Probably hollow point clips, too!

Maybe have been one of those shoulder things that go up.

Current FBI data shows that legally armed citizens. Shoot and kill more criminals. Than are shot and killed by law enforcement. When seconds determine if you or a loved one. Lives or dies at the hands of a criminal. Law enforcement is minutes away. You are your own 1st responder.

Finnky

Really? I thought stat was that non-LEO intervened far more often, but actually shot less often. Of course when they do shot suspects are more likely to take ambient temperature challenge – and far more importantly far fewer innocent bystanders are hit.

No disparagement intended toward officers. Heading to the fray, only knowing there is already violence occurring or threatened means arriving late and jumping in semi-prepared. You have a duty, usually lived up to, to act whereas the rest of us do not.

Here is a DuckDuckGo search for “NYC heavy trigger pull weight”: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=NYC+heavy+trigger+pull+weight&atb=v340-1&ia=web And here is the first article that the above search returns, from Guns.com back in 2021: GOODBYE NYPD TRIGGER: AGENCY SHIFTS FROM 12-POUND TRIGGER PULLS https://www.guns.com/news/2021/08/26/goodbye-nypd-trigger-agency-shifts-from-12-pound-trigger-pulls While it certainly isn’t my job to defend NYC police, I seriously doubt that anyone reading this comment would be very fast and accurate in a high tension situation, if they were forced to use a police duty handgun with a 12-lb. trigger pull. Rather than increase training and discipline the NYPD’s bean counting bureaucrats decided it would be more cost effective… Read more »

Thank You Mr. Weingarten, Good article and Opinion !

Another story (among many!) involving firearms that the legacy media will spike since it doesn’t fit their narrative.

Desert Guy

And those two will be provided-for over many years by taxes extorted from honest hard-working citizens. Talk about robbery!

Courageous Lion - Hear Me Roar - Jus Meum Tuebor

Naaaa they only rob you to hide the fake money system and to make you believe they need it…THEY DON’T!

Bigfootbob

Thank you for the feel good story this morning Dean!

If we all could do that, then the future would be better.

Constitutional carry is a great thing for lawbiding citizens but not so much for the stupid criminals. Let freedom ring and criminals go to jail or suffer the alternative to a life sentence for thier criminal activity.

Jonesy

According to the “Cop Shows” on the boob tube this is a total myth as Hazcat has so stated (sarc).

Georgia and Atlanta are not the same. I have a home in another small town in North East Georgia. Last year the town experienced a tragedy when fully half of the members of the local Democratic Club suddenly passed away. The remaining membership is attempting to bravely carry on, but admits that it it isn’t really a club since he’s all by himself.

Ellijay is near to Kennesaw Ga, a city that passed a law in the 1980’s REQUIRING firearms and ammo be kept in your house UNLESS you chose not to, or were a prohibited person. Crime went down drastically after that. You’d think the bad guys would be aware of this and pick some other area to pull a robbery in. But them criminals aren’t the brightest bulb in the box.
Another great example of armed citizens doing their part to stop crime, and no one got shot. WIN WIN to me.

Arny

Another thief. They should have went to the camping section. Grabbed a hatchet and begun to chop his hand off. Before the police arrived. That way the thief would have something to contemplate while sitting in jail.

Courageous Lion - Hear Me Roar - Jus Meum Tuebor

Works every time. Three armed for defense against one armed for offense. My kind of odds Yeah good guys.

uncle dudley

Sutton must be stupid, in this day and age many people are armed.
He is lucky one of the good guys didn’t have an itchy finger.

Just goes to show: Well trained concealed carry discipline not only saves lives of innocent citizens, it saves lives of perps. Never discount the intimidation factor of the business end of a large caliber handgun. Only fools (or the very drugged up) resist it.

james

Wow, that .45acp could have taken out the side of the building.

Finnky

They lived because they didn’t go in guns blazing. Had he opened fire, I have no doubt that bystanders would have ended him. Good guys acted with restraint and exercised judgement. Kind of a shame from perspective of “public good” – but far easier on the participants. Think of Kyle if you ever NEED to use your gun. I’m luck enough to live a rather safe lifestyle and generally avoiding travelling through dangerous areas. Hopeful my luck will hold on this topic, though do my best to prepare in case it doesn’t…. luck shines on the prepared.
