While mass murderers are as likely to be mentally deranged environmentalists as they are to be Muslims (most do not show political affiliation), some have made clear they favored keeping guns from the general public. It is the ultimate in logic-defying irrationality of those who promote disarmament.
They want to murder as many people as possible to show how easy it is to murder many people.
[the mass murderer] made three key points in the manifesto, which is in the hands of the police: he wanted to kill himself, he wanted to prove how easy it was to buy a gun in Kentucky and he wanted to highlight a mental health crisis in America.
The mass-murderer legally purchased an AR-15 assault rifle on April 4, six days before he entered the bank at 8:33am where he was met by a friendly woman colleague at the entrance. He told her ‘you need to get out of here’ before he tried to shoot her.
But the weapon was unloaded and the safety catch was on. He then loaded the rifle, flicked off the safety and blasted the fleeing woman in the back.
Two things stand out from the paragraph above. First, The murderer could see the way to media fame was to promote gun control by murdering many people with an AR15-type rifle. Second, if the bank employee had not been forcibly disarmed by her employer, it is possible she could have stopped the mass murder before it happened because of the incompetence of the murderer.
Research on mass shootings has shown time and again mass murders look for soft, unprotected targets.
From the Crime Prevention Research Center about Columbine:
The Majority leader of the state House at the time, Doug Dean, told John Lott that Klebold had written his state legislators opposing the legislation. The bill would have allowed people to carry permitted concealed handguns on school property. The killers timed their attack for the very day that final passage of the law was planned for in the legislature.
It is not surprising that mass murderers favor keeping potential victims unarmed. Many of them made clear in their writings they go to considerable lengths to conduct attacks where the potential victims are required by law to be disarmed. This brings the second point above into question. If the bank in Louisville had allowed people to have the means to defend themselves, he would likely have chosen a different target. From the CPRC:
Updated March 28, 2023: At some point, you would think that the empirical evidence would be overwhelming. When the Aurora, Colorado Batman movie theater shooter attacked, there were seven movie theaters showing “The Dark Knight Rises” on July 20th within 20 minutes of the killer’s apartment at 1690 Paris St, Aurora, Colorado, but the killer picked the only theater that had signs posted that it was a gun-free zone. His first target had been an airport but he worried about their “substantial security.” Similar stories have occurred at malls such as in Omaha and Salt Lake City or the Lafayette, Louisiana movie theater. Despite teachers carrying guns in schools in 20 states, all the shooting attacks at schools have occurred in schools that ban teachers from having guns.
Many mass murderers have mental problems. They also take considerable time and effort to plan their attacks and to choose targets. They are subject to deterrence. The Old National Bank specifically banned employees from being armed. From the Team Member Handbook:
Possession of dangerous or unauthorized materials, such as explosives, firearms, or any type of weapons inside the workplace or on company premises. In some states, there are additional laws about this subject; when applicable, state law takes precedence over these guidelines.
Mass public murder can be reduced in at least two ways which would cost very little. Both are opposed by America’s de-facto ruling class in the Media, bureaucracies, intelligence services, and academia. They are:
- Reduce the incentive for mass public murder by reducing the payoff of media fame. The mass media did this with celebrity suicides. They have chosen not to do it with mass public murder.
- Increase the deterrence to mass public murder by allowing the public to defend itself with armed force.
About Dean Weingarten:
Dean Weingarten has been a peace officer, a military officer, was on the University of Wisconsin Pistol Team for four years, and was first certified to teach firearms safety in 1973. He taught the Arizona concealed carry course for fifteen years until the goal of Constitutional Carry was attained. He has degrees in meteorology and mining engineering, and retired from the Department of Defense after a 30 year career in Army Research, Development, Testing, and Evaluation.
If a government or business disarms people under it’s charge, then it is up to the private business or government to protect those same people. When this fails miserably (as it always does) then they should be sued in court. Taking away a persons ability to defend oneself should bring great responsibility to such party..Their insane logic works both ways..
If your State allows concealed carry, but, your employer, or business does not, they should be held accountable.
concealed is concealed. I carry anyway or just don’t go there. Bars in my state prohibit being armed insude, consuing booze or not. Serious felony bust for simply carrying in there. So I don’t go in. at all. Ever. Except for one place I ised to go with a friend…. who carries there himself, so does the barkeep, and most patrons. No one to buse me, that’s fine. Next state over, it is legal tocarry in there as long as you are not drinking anything booze. Fine. I’m usually driving back home after, so don’t drink anyway. Its toe social… Read more »
Time to move!!
That’s good to know, wasn’t aware that had changed. Guess no more shows for me at the Keller Auditorium anymore! Not that I will ever travel into the cesspool Portland has become!! Done with that city!
all this brought on by the brainwashed communist anti-gun democrats who want to rule everything I would rather die trying to stop them than to allow this to happen
The AR-15 is NOT an assault rifle. It’s very hard to combat this extreme misnomer when 2A reporters like this use the term.
The use is in a quote from the Daily Mail.
Dean is a very ardent 2A supporter, and very well respected reporter of facts. At least that’s the way I feel.
Yup. His work is always meticulously researched, very accurate and complete.
Tionico — he’s definitely one of the better writers in the industry. ….a true professional. . .
Music — How bout quoting it with line scribed through it…?
Another method for significantly reducing the number of these shootings would be to eliminate the use of seratonin reuptake inhibitors prescribed for depression (Paxil, Prozac, Zoloft, etc). They are a factor in many of these shootings.
The first one that I remember was in Louisville, KY, Sept 14th 1989. A man, whose name I will not repeat, entered his former workplace, killed 8 wounded another 12, then shot himself. He had been taking Prozac for about a month. The drug company settled with the victims. John Noveske wrote about connections between several of these events and mind altering prescription medications, shortly before his untimely death. While I’m certain that not everyone that takes these medications becomes a suicidal mass murderer, I’d be willing to bet that the vast majority of the mass murders are being committed… Read more »
Trussman — are you a carpenter, or not?
Dr. Peter Breggin argued against these drugs too. I once believed they were the cause of Andrea Yates’s infanticides. I still believe they were a factor, but only one factor.
a frequently suppressed factor, I must add……..wonder why?
The same folks promiting that garbage drug are the ones brought us the WooFlew “vaccines”. Money is their god, and a poor one they have chosen.
However, there are many people on SSRIs that don’t commit murder. These have been a life saver for me and I’d assume many many others and we haven’t committed murder. There are unintended consequences with such a proposal. One might be that anxiety and depression increase in the population and we have more murder and suicide.
Billybob — ….yet.

…I’m just messing with ya….
Let’s take a look at ssri’s…
Why would this be down voted?
It shouldn’t be downvoted. This shooters parents have said on national television that he was under mental health care, and taking prescription medication.
“Many mass murderers have mental problems. They also take considerable time and effort to plan their attacks and to choose targets.” DO YOU THINK???
