Both are versatile, powerful cartridges. Both have been putting meat in the freezer and trophies on the wall for generations of big game hunters. But when the numbers get crunched and the ballistics gel stops shaking, only one will come out on top.

So can someone give us the Cliff’s Notes version. No way I could sit through more than a couple of minutes of that boring video. Let me guess at the conclusion; either one will do just fine.
Having a lifetime’s worth of experience with both cartridges, I’ll venture a guess that the conclusion will be: .270 WIN is best for game from 400 lbs and down, and the .30-06 is better for game greater than 400 pounds. The .270 will take the larger game, but shot placement and bullet choice becomes more critical. For deer-sized game and smaller with the .270, my experiences say that bullet choice is almost irrelevant. With a solid hit the projectile design matters little. However, the .270 has a limited amount of choice in the weight of the projectiles available. But the… Read more »
I bought a 6.8 just because I prefer a .270.lighter bullets, but I can tell the difference in recoil btwn the .270 and the ‘06. At 78, that difference is very noticeable. JackO’Conner was right!
I have taken deer with both the 30-06 and the 7mm rem mag. I gave my 30-06 to my son because I became a huge fan of 7mm and hunted with it for about 25 years. I took 2 elk, one a bull and the other a cow at over 4 hundred yards. The bull was a one shot kill and the cow was a little more challenging because it was uphill at about thirty degrees or so. It took two to get the proper trajectory and a third hit her front shoulder. She struggled over the crest of the… Read more »
I have a 742 06, it likes the Federal Premium 165 grain bullet. Never shot a 270, yet anyway. For deer hunting I use the 06 or my BAR 300 win mag.
Either cartridge will do just fine if you do your part.
