HuntSAFE is a component of NSSF’s Project ChildSafe initiative, which focuses on promoting safe firearm handling, secure storage and preventing unauthorized access. S.A.F.E. is an acronym for Store your firearms responsibly when not in use; Always practice firearm safety; Focus on your responsibilities as a firearm owner; and Education is key to preventing accidents.
“We like to say a successful hunt is one where you get home safely,” says Joe Bartozzi, NSSF President and CEO. “The fall hunting season is a great time to remind everyone of the importance of responsible, ethical and safe hunting, and we’re grateful CarbonTV has partnered with us to get that message out.”
The new “Safety is Always in Season” video features Julie McQueen, President of CarbonTV and host of CarbonTV’s “Outdoor Weekly” program, as she shares seven “rules to live by” when using or handling firearms at home, on the range and especially in the field.
“All of us at CarbonTV are big fans of Project ChildSafe and its mission to help prevent firearm accidents, thefts and misuse,” McQueen says. “It’s really important for all of us who enjoy our hunting tradition to model every aspect of hunting safety, and we’re so honored NSSF and Project ChildSafe asked us to be part of this year’s HuntSAFE effort.”
The new video joins a suite of hunting safety resources available from Project ChildSafe and on CarbonTV’s “Firearm Safety” web page. These include:
- A Future Hunters Pledge & Walk-Through Module parents and kids can view together to learn and discuss smart and safe firearm handling, ethical and responsible hunting and gun safety.
- Tips and guidelines on safe firearm handling
- A hunting checklist for families and a HuntSAFE quiz
- The Ethical Hunter brochure
- A video and brochure on firearm safety in vehicles
- A Gun Storage Options For Your Lifestyle infographic
First-time hunters will also appreciate the library of hunting tips, tactics and techniques available at NSSF’s www.letsgohunting.org website.
“Hunting is a time-honored tradition for many Americans, one that benefits conservation efforts across the country, and it’s important that safety remains at the core of that tradition,” Bartozzi said. “With so many Americans discovering and returning to this tradition, it’s a good time to remind all gun owners that storing firearms securely when they’re not in use is the #1 way to help prevent accidents and keep guns out of the wrong hands.”
About Project ChildSafe
NSSF, the trade association of the firearms industry, launched Project ChildSafe in 1999 (prior to 2003 the program was called Project HomeSafe) as a nationwide initiative to promote firearms responsibility and provide safety education to all gun owners. Since 1999, the program has provided more than 40 million free firearm safety kits that include a gun lock to gun owners in all 50 states and the five U.S. territories. That’s in addition to the more than 70 million free locking devices manufacturers have included, and continue to include, with new firearms sold since 1998. While helping to prevent accidents among children is a focus, Project ChildSafe is intended to help adults practice greater firearm safety in the home.
