Wonder how the R8 stacks up, or what keeps it off such a list.

GomeznSA

Ho hum, yet another ‘my favorite’ revolvers piece. NOT saying any of the choices listed are poor choices by any means. Articles like this are in the same realm as ‘favorite’ cars, or shoes or jeans etc. IOW strictly one man’s opinion. Period.

FL-GA

This is a highly subjective subject, of course, but I couldn’t put the Chiappa first because to me, it’s just plain ugly to look at. I would include it in the top five, however, because it works so darn well. It seems like the other day I picked up a S&W M1913 from a former WWI US Cavalry officer, (okay, it was about 1965), and still enjoy shooting it. To this day the thing is 100% original, (except for the half-moon clips which were often discarded anyway), and is great in single-action. I never measured it, but double-action takes a… Read more »

Wild Bill

Because I own and enjoy three of the five revolvers that the author mentions, I am not willing to say that the author is wrong, but he has certainly overlooked Charter Arms extremely strong actions, very accurate target models, and very reasonable prices… and made in America.

Speaking to musicman44mag question, have seen one (out of the box) black hawk and heard of another one that literally fell apart while shooting, did not blow up. The fellow shot two rounds on the second round, if I recall, the cylinder and something else fell to the ground.. the guy pick everything up and placed in the box and left to go back to the store he got it at.

Never heard what went wrong.

I posted a question the other day asking which 357 could handle a steady diet of 357mag at max load like buffalo bores. Would have liked to have heard which one of these guns is built like a tank. I have been looking at S&W 28 28-2 29. One person suggested Ruger GP-100 but my gunsmith suggested a Ruger Redhawk.

Wonder why this author didn’t mention any of those the RR or 28-29.

California Uber Alles

Two reasons: RedHawk is an older line, and why mention 2 Rugers or smith and wessons in a list of only 5 — this is more of a sampling of 5 well liked wheel guns from different manufacturers. Once you start discussing each company, there are a ton of similar models that fanbois could argue about til the cows come home. Anyway, Ruger made a ton of wheel guns that are all well loved, but gp-100 is a newer offering and is touted as being softer shooting (cannot confirm, but when shopping for my first wheel gun the gp-100 was… Read more »

Thanks for sharing. I love Colt but my understanding is that they are not as strong as the ones I mentioned. I don’t want to blow them up shooting high powered stuff. I am starting to think that if I want to buy something for testing to see what is too strong maybe I should get a Taurus since they are cheap and people on here seem to think they are so good. I have never flattened a primer on any bullet I have built but it is time for me to reach out and go where this man has… Read more »

m44 – in case the reply from CUA didn’t cover your question, the likelihood of an ‘N’ frame S&W being able to handle a steady diet of full power loads is pretty high. After all, that is the same frame used in the .44Mag so it should be more than robust enough. The real question is how can you afford to buy enough ammo to worry about long term failure?

musicman44mag

LOL, I just bought 8 lbs of powder to go with the 16 lbs I already have, 10,000 primers and 1,500 projectiles to go with the 4,000 hp I already have. Think I got that covered.

GomeznSA

m44 – can you adopt me – I sure don’t have the big bucks to afford those quantities 😉

musicman44mag

LOL. Allot of it for if the SHTF for trade but I will burn up some of it to get in practice for after the election. The left is already saying take to the streets. We know what that means, more peaceful protests.

Irrenmann

“Tank” is indeed often applied to the GP100, and you have a good range of models and barrel lengths to choose from there, including a special upscale eight-shot version if interested.

musicman44mag

I know, that 8 shot is really tempting and they say that they made sure that it would not be any weaker than the 6-7 shot. I would have to see one in person to measure the thickness of the cylinder wall.
