News to me. Speaking as one who did more than the standard tour in SE Asia as well as eight advisory tours in Central America and the Philippines I never had much need for a “Desert” machete. I do still have some machetes I brought back from Honduras and El Salvador and they are all hand made out of spring steel, hold an excellent edge and are the standard side arm of the locals.
