TX: Homeowner in Sherman Defends Property in Self-Defense Shooting ~ VIDEO

SHERMAN, Texas — A Sherman, Texas, homeowner defended his property on Monday, June 17, 2024, by shooting an alleged burglar who reportedly charged at him with a screwdriver.

The incident occurred around 5 p.m. in the 1300 block of East Ida Road. The Sherman Police Department received a call from the homeowner reporting a burglary and subsequent shooting. Officers arrived swiftly and detained the suspect, 36-year-old Jose Menjivar, less than a block away from the scene.

According to the police, Menjivar was found breaking into the homeowner’s shed. When confronted, he allegedly charged at the homeowner with a screwdriver. In response, the homeowner fired his gun, striking Menjivar in the hand.

Lieutenant Sam Boyle of the Sherman Police Department stated, “To this point in our investigation, it appears that the firearms discharge was justified according to state law.” Boyle also mentioned that burglary tools were found at the scene, supporting the homeowner’s claim of self-defense.

Menjivar was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. After receiving medical treatment, he was arrested and charged with burglary of a building. The investigation is ongoing, and further details will be provided as they become available.

Authorities have reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat related to this incident. The homeowner’s quick actions in defending his property have been noted, and the legal proceedings will continue to clarify the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Lol, a screw driver against a gun, what an idiot that guy must be to think he would not have gotten SCREWed on that deal.

gregs

the homeowner should spend more time training, a shot to the hand isn’t the best place to stop a criminal.

J.galt

Bad gun user! bad shooting! Bad shot!!!!!

The only good criminals are dead. Cost the public legal fees, incarceration fees and future predation. Shoot felons DEAD.

Bubba

Maybe.
Or maybe perps hand was coving his heart when shot.
A hand shot is not intentional.
More range time is definitely needed.
Double tap to the chest & 1 to the head. Assess the situation(take cover if needed), reload, call for back up.
Hopefully he bleeds out before backup arrives.

Enemy of Democracy

Hand/arm hits are quite common, eyes tend to focus on the weapon in opponents hand, when under stress so that is where they shoot.
On the lighter side a taxidermist I once new said he was amazed at the number of BigHorn Sheep that came into his shop with bullet holes in the horns.

Buzz

WHAT? Gun only held 1 Bullet?

Bubba

It was a 22 derringer. He was aiming center of mass. 😉
Bummer perp is still breathing air.

We’ve a lot of those invaders here in west central.Florida where I live. They mostly keep a low profile. Because they understand “F*ck around and find out!”

Yeah , you don’t hear too much about that type of low-lifes around here, but there are plenty of homeless around. They must like the weather.

I didn’t go to lawyer college so this is just my opinion – the shooter was NOT ‘protecting his property’ – he was protecting his own life and limb. The dynamics of the situation changed dramatically when the burglar/thief attacked him.
