UT Self-Defense Shooting: Homeowner & Neighbor Put Down Aggressive Pit Bulls

Ogden, UT – A tense situation unfolded Monday evening in Ogden when two pit bulls were shot in an act of self-defense by a homeowner and his neighbor. The incident occurred in a cul-de-sac, leaving the community shaken but relieved that no humans were harmed.

Dane Wise, the homeowner, recounted the events to KSL TV. He was working on his truck outside his home when two pit bulls entered the area and began exhibiting aggressive behavior. “They started getting aggressive, barking and growling at me. I had a hammer because I was working on my truck, and I threw it,” Wise explained. The dogs briefly retreated, allowing Wise to go inside and retrieve his firearm.

Upon returning, Wise discovered that the dogs had cornered his neighbor. In a frightening moment, the neighbor fired at one of the dogs, causing the other to charge at Wise.

“They were after him, so he took one out. As soon as he shot his gun, the other pit bull came at me, and I shot him at point-blank,” Wise said. The neighbor’s shot proved fatal for one dog, while Wise’s shots, though multiple, left the second dog injured but alive.

The aftermath of the shooting saw the arrival of the dogs’ owners, who were understandably distressed. “We both apologized and told them we were sorry it had to happen that way. They seemed OK with it, although obviously upset and somewhat mad,” Wise shared. He empathized with their feelings but emphasized the necessity of protecting his community, particularly the children in the area.

An animal control officer responded to the scene, and the incident is currently under investigation. It was revealed that these dogs had a history of aggressive behavior, having bitten another neighbor just a few weeks prior. The Ogden City Police Department confirmed that the owners had been cited for the previous incident and that the surviving dog was taken for veterinary care.

Wise, describing himself as a “dog lover,” expressed regret over the situation. “I don’t like what happened. I’m not proud of it in any way at all. Certainly, I feel like we’re safer, and it’s a shame it even had to come to that,” he lamented.

This incident highlights the importance of responsible pet ownership and the lengths to which individuals may go to ensure their safety and that of their neighbors. The community awaits further updates as the investigation continues.

Would you have shot those dogs if you were in that situation? Tell us in the comments below.

Having dealt with a lot of dogs in 6 decades of life.

I have found a lot of dog owners refuse to believe that it was/or could be their dog.

Finnky

Refusal to believe is understandable. Often these same dogs love their owners/family and cuddle with whomever will reciprocate. However on the loose or with strangers their behavior is the exact opposite. Had a pyr who I would have trusted with any human except for her dog aggression. Never met a dog who loved hugs and pets more than she did. She would not take human food or misbehave in any way beyond her dog aggression. Had I not witnessed how she reacted to other dogs, I would struggled to believe it. It’s even harder to think badly of your offspring.… Read more »

Yes, and those are the ones that think their rug rats are perfect little angels and do no wrong and they are actually some of the worst kids there are.
The people that lived next door to me when I was a kid had 8 children and thought that. One of their sons used to try and get their dog to bite me. They were all such great kids, don’t believe me? just ask their parents.

Irresponsible Bad Owners equals Bad Dogs regardless of the Breed!
That is from me and my Pit Bulls.
That said I would not hesitate to put them down if they are a threat.

Duane,
So true, unfortunetly many parents of criminal delinquents have the same mind set.

Finnky

Isn’t that the reason for the memes “gentle giant” and “di na do nuffin”?

Been there done that and it’s very unfortunate for the dogs that the owner are not more responsible. Got attacked by a bull mastiff and a Rottweiler that killed all my chickens . They saved the dog but it cost them 5 grand after I put 2 – 185 grain XTP .45 acp rounds through him .

How much did you charge them for your chickens? The must have loved their little angel to spend more than 50 cents on it after that scene.

Irresponsible dog owners are the problem. People get these little puppies that are so cute. Then when they can’t house break the animal and the newness wears off, they put them in their back yard where they yap and bark. Dogs are social animals and need to be with people. It is animal abuse to leave them alone in a back yard, where all they do is bark constantly. If they get out, they have not been socialized and can become aggressive. Of course, these people can’t believe that their “fur babies” would ever be aggressive. Pit bulls were bred… Read more »

Yes, I would have shot them and there wouldn’t have been any going to a vet. Anyone that is stupid enough to even have one of these dogs needs to realize the potential. My next door neighbor has one and it can’t stand me. I get near the fence while walking and it goes bonkers. I ride a bicycle for exercise and one day it was out and I had to hit it with pepper spray because it came after me on the bike. The neighbors “understood” and said it was a mess to clean up because the dog tried… Read more »

I hate pitbulls, Chihuahuas too.

I don’t care for poodles but I got a Bernie doodle and I love her. She is smart as all get out but doesn’t look like a poodle. Burmese mountain dog, 1/4 and 3/4 poodle.

Get Out

We have dog owners who feel the need to bring their dogs into local stores with them and these dogs aren’t service dogs either. I’ve seen people charged by a couple of these dogs and witnessed one dog fight in the aisle. The first comment from the dog owner is “He/she won’t bite you”. It’s a matter of time until someone is bitten, and the store gets sued along with the dog owner.

I live in a tourist city on the Pacific Northwest Coast. There’s hardly a single weekend that doesn’t have a tourist event. We have 1 grocery store an IGA. Dumbass tourists like to take Fido everywhere they go including inside the store. Kudos to the IGA Staff, without exception they insist those insensitive dummies remove their dogs from the store post haste. Many are shocked by the demand, but are compliant. I’ve only heard about one or two incidents where they become belligerent. I’m positive those kind of people’s dogs share their owner’s temperament. Local residents drive an hour each… Read more »

Naaa…I open carry in a cross draw and if some dog attacks me in the store the store owner and dog owner will deal with the mess I’ll make of the pooch.

Aggressive dogs MUST be tied. Pit Bulls are the most-implicated breed in dog attacks of all. These dogs were involved in a prior instance of attack on a human. The owner should have chained the dogs and is negligent. The people who defended themselves were faultless.

billybob

I like animals more than I like people but would never hesitate in putting an animal down that threatens humans or other animals for no good reason!

one shot one kill. do not apologize. get more range time.

“Aim small, miss small.”

Hell yeah I would have shot them! My name is not Alpo. No sympathy for the idiot owners who knew they were aggressive and let them run loose, anyway. Hopefully, the surviving dog dies as it is a given they will let it run loose or get loose again, in time.

So many want to share their snarling, biting, prosthesis with the neighborhood.

Edit: My comments towards the dog owners may have been a bit insensitive. As such, please allow me to share a song that may be appropriate for a doggie funeral.

100% YES, and as the owners are repeat offenders, fines should be significantly punitive.
