As the holiday season winds down, you might find yourself with a few new gift cards burning a hole in your pocket.

If you’re like me—spending countless hours perfecting your aim at the range and carrying daily—you know the value of every piece of your EDC (Everyday Carry) setup. Let’s explore how you can use those X-Mas gift cards to make meaningful upgrades that enhance both your gun handling performance and safety.

Ammunition: The Foundation of Good Training Ammo costs are always a concern when training at the range, but as any seasoned shooter will tell you, cutting corners on firearms training can cost you more in the long run, possibly even your life. Use your gift cards to stockpile training ammo. Matching the grain weight and performance of your practice rounds to your carry rounds ensures consistency and reliability when you need it most. Check out local retailers for post-holiday deals—they often reduce prices to move inventory quickly.

Maintenance: The Unsung Hero of Reliability Your firearm is your lifeline. Regular maintenance might not be glamorous, but it’s essential. Old or worn springs can be the Achilles’ heel of a reliable gun. Invest in a comprehensive spring replacement kit —this small investment can prevent or repair malfunctions and extend the life of your firearm. Consider stocking up a few extra from brands known for quality, like Wolff Gunsprings, for kits that keep your gun in top shape.

Weapon Lights: Seeing Is Surviving If you haven’t yet equipped your firearm with a weapon light, now is the time. Nighttime or low-light situations demand positive target identification to ensure you’re making safe and responsible decisions. I recommend the Streamlight TLR-7X for its balance of size, power, and usability or the Surefire X300 for unmatched durability and brightness. Spare batteries are a must—don’t let a dead light be the reason you find yourself at a disadvantage.

Holsters: Secure, Comfortable, Concealable Upgrading your holster can significantly change your carry experience. Move beyond the basic models and choose a holster that offers security, comfort, and quick access. I switched to a holster from a Crossbreed IWB (inside the waistband) Holster last year and noticed an immediate improvement in comfort and draw speed. Keep an eye out for holiday sales from reputable makers like Tier 1 Concealed and PHLster for high-quality options that won’t break the bank.

Often Overlooked Essentials Here are a few items that many forget to upgrade but can make a big difference in your shooting experience:

  • O-rings for your weapon: These small parts can wear out and compromise the functionality of your weapon.
  • High-quality grip screws: Cheap screws strip easily and can loosen over time, affecting your grip and control.
  • Professional-grade firearm lubricant: A smooth operation reduces wear and ensures reliability. Look for brands that offer long-lasting protection.
  • Thread locker for optics and accessories: Secure your enhancements to withstand recoil and regular use.

Expanding Your Horizons While the basics are vital, here are additional upgrades to consider if you’re looking to take your shooting to the next level:

  • Optic Sights: A reliable red dot sight can drastically improve your targeting precision and speed. The Holosun 507C is a great choice for durability and clear visuals.
  • Magazine Extensions: For added capacity and better handling, consider adding a magazine extension, especially if you train extensively or participate in shooting competitions.
  • Training Courses: Lastly, consider using those gift cards for advanced training courses. Skills decay without practice, and professional instruction can introduce new techniques and reinforce critical habits.

Your Approach to Upgrades Remember, the best upgrades are the ones that contribute to your safety, confidence, and proficiency. Use your holiday gift cards to invest in high-quality, meaningful improvements that enhance your readiness and effectiveness.

As you head into the new year, armed with the right tools and training, you’ll not only shoot better but also carry responsibly and with greater confidence. Here’s to a safe, accurate, and trained year ahead!

I made that mistake about 2017 with obummer taking all the ammo. Powder went up twice the price and primers went up about 4x the price.
If you are going to shoot it doesn’t matter but if you buy it for barter, primers will be harder to find because that is the first thing to go in war time and they are harder to make than gun powder.
