A key finding reveals that for a 13-member Marine Rifle Squad engaging an enemy in a defensive position, rushing across 100 meters of rough desert terrain, a 15 lbs. weight reduction for troops can cut squad casualties from 8.9 to 3.5 per engagement.

With ammunition accounting for 8 lbs. per troop, a 30 percent reduction (2.4 lbs. per troop) contributes to 16 percent of the total weight savings—potentially saving one troop per engagement.

Going from 1 piece to 2 pieces introduces twice the potential points of failure. When it comes to ammo it’s better to stick with the tried and true. Speaking as someone who served as a marine I can tell you that 2-3 pounds doesn’t make a difference. If I read the article correctly all testing was simulations. I say put this ammo out in the civilian market for a few years and see how it really functions before our troops have to depend on it for their lives. Second thought, what’s the cost? I am always a little suspect when a study, paid for by a company, just so happens to confirm the value of the company’s product. I become even more suspect when, after reading 8 different articles, and visiting the company website, there are zero links to the study. There are references to a December 2024 release of the “study”, but no actual links to the study. So a company that makes lighter ammo did a bunch of simulations that shockingly shows a massive benefit to lighter ammo. Got it.
