Orion Township, Mich. — In a dramatic incident Wednesday morning, a 67-year-old man was fatally shot after breaking into a home with the intent to attack his ex-girlfriend. The shooting, carried out by the woman’s stepson, has been deemed a justified act of self-defense by local authorities.
The suspect, identified as Galen Gavitt of Unionville, had a history of violent threats against his ex-girlfriend, a 62-year-old woman he lived with for 17 years in Tuscola County. She had recently sought refuge at her stepdaughter’s house in Orion Township after obtaining a personal protection order and an extreme risk protection order against him due to his threatening behavior.
The incident unfolded just after 10 a.m. at a residence on Elkhorn Lake Road. Sheriff Michael Bouchard explained that Gavitt broke into the home using an ax to smash a basement window. The woman and her 36-year-old stepson immediately retreated to an upstairs bedroom, barricading the door in an attempt to protect themselves.
Despite their efforts, Gavitt fired a shot through the bedroom door, narrowly missing the stepson, who dropped to the floor to avoid the bullet. Gavitt then entered the room, pointed his gun at the stepson, and declared his intention to harm his ex-girlfriend. At this critical moment, the stepson, who was armed, shot Gavitt, striking him in the head and killing him instantly [DRT: dead right there].
Sheriff Bouchard confirmed that Gavitt had previously had his firearms confiscated under Michigan’s red flag laws. However, he managed to obtain a revolver, believed to be taken from his ex-wife, which he used during the break-in.
“It’s a terrible situation any time there’s a loss of life,” Bouchard said. “But…the person that came there to perpetrate violence, thank God, was the only one who was hurt, and in this case killed, by the violence they sought to wreak.”
The ex-girlfriend and her stepson were unharmed in the incident, which Bouchard described as a clear case of self-defense.
“The stepson’s actions appear justified as Gavitt was intent on causing serious harm,” he added.
This incident reminds us all once more of the importance of self-defense and protecting one’s home and loved ones. The quick and decisive action of the stepson prevented what could have been a far more tragic outcome, exemplifying the value of responsible gun ownership in ensuring personal safety.
The investigation is ongoing, but authorities have made it clear that the stepson’s actions saved lives. This case serves as a powerful reminder of the right to self-defense and the crucial role it plays in protecting against imminent threats. Stay heavily armed and dangerous.
And here in Michigan it’s being touted as a failure of the red flag law Gov. WHitler rammed down our throats amid calls by the left to “strengthen” that unconstitutional infringement.
I say they’re damn lucky the assailant was able to get a gun. Bombs & Molotov cocktails are easy to make and damn difficult to defend against. If someone wants to kill there are a myriad of ways to do so. It doesn’t require a gun to accomplish murder but it quite often requires a gun to defend against it.
“resource for victims” who’s lives are threatened…?
Get firearm and learn to use it well-> it’s your life…!
Ammoland should get an editor who can think and write without AI.
This article is a jumbled AI mess. First it claims the bastard shot the locked door with a shotgun. Then it states “…he managed to obtain a revolver, believed to be taken from his ex-wife, which he used during the break-in.”

REd flag laws are unconstatutional.
They were “physically” unharmed, in the incident…it’s going to take some time to adjust to the mental harm something like this can do to your psyche.
